Less Talking, More Doing – How to Take Action in 2016

New Year, New Plan…

Happy New Year to all of you!!

The last year has flown by and one thing is for sure ~ I have done a pretty crummy job when it comes to taking any action. Has this ever happened to any of you? You start off the new year with good…no, AWESOME intentions and by the middle of February you think, “I’ve gotten nothing accomplished. This just isn’t working. I’ll just start next year.” Anyone else?

Confession Time: I’m good at making excuses. A lot of them. “I can’t do this because….” or “I could get this done, but…” These statements are toxic. To life. To business. To your sanity.  I understand how easy it is to make excuses. To put things off until the kids are older or you have more time, more money, more energy. In the short term, it sometimes seems like the reasonable thing to do.

But really, let’s face it: The best time is NOW. Tomorrow is never promised and I personally would rather accomplish even the tiniest bit of something rather than find myself drowning in a sea of excuses.

Time for a Change

I have made a decision for 2016. I’ve decided that I no longer want to end up in the same spot every single year, wishing I had taken action in business, life, money, etc. A year from now, I want to be happy with the results of hard work rather than frustrated with all the excuses throughout the year.

Time is too precious. We all have the same amount of time each day. 168 hours a week. 365 days a year. I get a little nausious thinking about how much time I’ve wasted. Enough of that talk, however.

A Word to Highlight the Year

This is going to be the year for Action, my word for 2016. Have you chosen yours?

What do you want the upcoming year to hold? What is most important to you? What do you see as a priority? In my opinion, choosing a word that highlights the year (and keeping that word top of mind) is better than any resolution you could ever make.

What are some ways you can take action in your business, especially if you’ve been in a stall pattern like I have for the last year or so? Is it even possible? Of course it is. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

Inspire Yourself and Dream Big!! I am a firm believer that in order to stay motivated we must have a dream that intimidates us. With that being said, it’s important to use that intimidation in a positive way, rather than letting it derail us from getting what we want. Sometimes we get so scared to take any action that we find ourselves stalling, afraid to take even the smallest step forward.

What are some ways to ensure this doesn’t happen in 2016?

Change your Mindset, Change your Life….right?

This may sound a little cliche, foo-foo, or whatever you want to call it. However,  the way you think about your life and business will have a huge impact on the action you take in the upcoming year. For the longest time I treated my business as a hobby.  In theory I had a “business” but in reality it was little more than a spare time project. I didn’t take the time to really consider what I wanted to achieve and I would consistently doubt myself whenever I thought about taking any action.

I fully believe that when you feed your mind with positive, inspiring messages on a daily basis, things will start to change. Doubts will start to diminish and you begin to build a little thing called confidence. When you have confidence in what you are doing, it makes taking action that much easier.

You can get a boost of daily inspiration in a variety of ways including books and podcasts. Since having twins, it’s a rare occasion to read a book all the way through or  listen to anything other than Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Part of my mindset shift for 2016 has been deciding that I will MAKE the time for those things.

Each day I make it a goal to get at least 10 minutes of reading in. My book of choice at the moment is, “You are a Badass” by Jen Sincero.  When I’m at the gym, I use that time (along with working out ha!) to listen to my favorite podcasts.

There is always a way to squeeze in some inspiration no matter how busy life can get. It’s one of the keys to making sure our mindset is in the right place. What are some ways that you inspire yourself?

Set small achievable goals…..and some big ones!

There’s this little thing that happens when you start writing your goals down. It’s called accountabilty. If I actually see my goals on paper that means I have to DO something to achieve them?! Yikes. That has always scared me a little bit. It’s so easy to talk about what your going to do but when it comes time to take the action, it may be another story.

Start small.  Put together a list of goals that are easier to achieve. Do you want to offer more services to your clients? Get more done during the day? Create a more organized office space? Determine the steps necessary to get you to that place. Take a course, read a book, download a productivity app, or even start working with a coach that will hold you accountable.

And don’t forget the BIG goals! Do you want to double your income this year? Figure out what it will take to get there. How much do you need to make per day? Per project? Per week? Breaking the big goals down into smaller chunks will make them seem more achievable and in turn, keep you motivated to reach them.

I encourage you in the new year to think about the goals you have for your business and where you would like to see yourself by the end of 2016. Keep a journal. Write them down. Put them on sticky notes and post them on a bulletin board, mirror, or even the fridge so you can see them on a daily basis that way they are always top of mind.

The Best Investment – You!

Investing in ourselves and our business is sometimes put on the back burner when we have bills to pay, babies to feed, and a family to take care of.  This is one area that should become a priority, however, and will keep you motivated to take action.

I’m not saying you have to blow thousands of dollars (or even hundreds), but investing in yourself is important so that you keep learning, growing, and moving in the right direction.

What are some ways you can invest in yourself and your business? Sign up for a course that will build your skills. Plan to attend an event that will not only help you learn but allow you to connect with likeminded people and build your network. Exercise. Read a book. Eat healthier. Meditate.

Obviously not all of these cost money and you may be inclined to do one more than the other but they will all, in different ways, help you move forward.

Annnnnnnnd….. ACTION!

No matter if you started 2016 off with a bang or are slowly figuring out what your next step is, the important thing is that you just keep DOING. Once we quit worrying about doing something wrong, or making things perfect, we can move into a space that allows us to make the most of our time and create a life and business we are proud of!

Do me a favor and post some of your 2016 goals as well as your “Word” of the year in the comments below! Would love to hear what is going on in your world :)

Hugs!! Have an awesome day!

Exciting things ahead for The Educated VA in 2016! Look for updates in the next few weeks :)
