Do you have a website? Great! Every business – no matter how small – needs one.
But here’s a more important question: is it working for you? Does it:
- Attract the attention of your ideal client?
- Make you look professional and trustworthy?
- Show off your best skills?
- Encourage people to buy?
If your website is not pulling its weight, you may want to take a hard look at seven problem areas that could be costing you.
- Poor design. I’m not talking about ugly color choices or amateur graphics (although those things do play a role). Poor design in this case refers to navigation, layout, and how easy it is for readers to find what they need. Be sure your services and contact page are prominent, and that your site is generally uncluttered and easy to read.
- Cheesy stock photos. Generic pictures of smiling women in headsets have no place on a virtual assistant website. I get that you’re trying to look “professional” and “business like” but when you’re a solo-preneur, you just look silly. Your potential clients want to know the real you. Use a picture of you instead.
- Free hosting. It’s hard to look professional when your domain name is coolva.blogspot.com. For about $10 per month you can have your own domain and your own hosting, and it’s so easy to set up that there really is no excuse for cheaping out here.
- No blog. Your blog is where you get to show off everything you know, plus it has the added benefit of attracting people who are looking for exactly the kind of knowledge you have.
- Blogging for the wrong audience. Now that you have a blog, keep in mind who you’re trying to attract. Your business blog should not contain posts about family holidays, nor should it be all about how to be a virtual assistant. Instead, write posts your potential clients want to read. Answer the questions they’re asking. Share tips for making the most of the tools they use in their business. Write reviews of the software they’re buying. Those are the kinds of posts that will interest the right readers, and turn some of them into clients.
- Advertising. PPC or banner ads have no place on a virtual service provider website. Adding affiliate links to your blog posts is fine, but don’t send your traffic away in exchange for the few pennies you’ll earn from a click on a Google ad.
- No call to action. What do you want readers to do once they land on your site? Don’t assume they’ll know to contact you, or to send you money. You have to tell them what to do.
Your website is usually the first thing a client sees. Avoiding these 7 mistakes will ensure that you are giving off a GREAT first impression as well as representing yourself and your services in the right way.
